Can the Bandit Queen sway the polls?

Article Abstract:

Phoolan Devi first came to public attention in India as the leader of an outlaw gang. It is claimed that this gang murdered 22 high-caste Thakur men and boys, taking revenge for an earlier incident in which she had been gang raped. However, she surrendered in 1983, and spent 11 years in prison. She is now taking a new approach to campaigning, and seeking to be elected MP for Mirzapur. She is portraying herself as the champion of the poor, but the corrupt nature of Indian politics means that even this may not be enough to secure victory.

Rao's 'Rasputin' is jailed for fraud

Article Abstract:

The recent jailing on charges of fraud of Chandraswamy, a self-proclaimed holy man who had considerable influence over Indian prime minister Narasimha Rao, indicates the extent to which the prime minister has lost popularity. Chandraswamy had enjoyed protection from the law as a result of the prime minister's patronage, but has seen his invulnerability dissolve as the Congress party faces defeat in parliamentary elections which are currently taking place.
