Canada's 'no' voters humiliate Mulroney and anger Indians

Article Abstract:

The Canadian referendum on constitutional reform negotiated in the Charlottetown Agreement resulted in 54.4% voting 'no.' Indian communities were annoyed and plan to assert their rights through the UN. Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Ontario and the Northwest Territories approved the proposals, which aimed to give Quebec more autonomy. French-speaking Quebeckers voted against the referendum and English-speakers voted for it. Provincial elections in 1994 may settle Quebec's position.

Quebec vote brings separation closer

Article Abstract:

Opinion polls indicate that the sovereignist Parti Quebecois will gain a strong victory over the opposition Quebec Liberal Party in the election to take place on Nov 30, 1998. This will make it possible for Parti Quebecois leader and Quebec Premier Lucien Bouchard to call one more referendum on whether Quebec should become independent from the rest of Canada. This referendum is likely to be held very soon if the Parti Quebecois gains many more votes than the Quebec Liberal Party.

Lifting the lid on the pizza man

Article Abstract:

Mixed views have been expressed about Domino's Pizza founder Tom Monaghan, who has gained a reputation for eccentricity. Most recently, he has sold the business for a reported $1 billion and states that he will give the entire amount to charity. He is ultra-conservative, but has also shown himself to be an astute businessman. He has become increasingly involved in charitable ventures over recent years, including opening two private and Catholic elementary schools.
