We need not fear the giant

Article Abstract:

German unification and changing economic circumstances produced problems, as the new Germany requires a different European plan and leaders suited to its changed state. Originally the EC was advantageous for the German economy, but no frontiers were defined as it was assumed that the east was irrelevant. Germany has received 1 million refugees from 1990-1993, more than double the number accepted by all the other EC states together. It has no more racial violence than other EC countries.

Peace, or myth wrapped in folly?

Article Abstract:

The Vance-Owen peace plan of Lord Owen and Cyrys Vance was accepted by the Muslims, Croats and Serbs for the wrong reasons and does not solve the real problems. The US blames Europe for failing to solve the conflict. The EC believes in the principle of avoiding racial tension, but ethnic divisions are important in the Balkans. The West promises not to permit aggression and ethnic cleansing to succeed but no government will take any action against it.

Kind words, cruel policies

Article Abstract:

Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary, the Visegrad group, meet with the EC on Oct 28, 1992. Trade barriers in iron, steel, textiles and food protect the EC's own industries but only 1% of total EC production is from Eastern Europe. The Phare programme offers bureaucratic assistance; its reports confuse promises with actual payments. The EC do not have a joint approach to refugees and let Central Europe deal with them.
