Where would we be without them?

Article Abstract:

Independence for Scotland, it has always been assumed, would make a great deal of difference to Scotland and the Scottish people but no difference to England and the remainder of the UK and its people. This is a great misconception. The remainder of the UK would certainly have a reduced status and would become a second-ranking power within Europe. The population would be reduced from 56 to 50 million and representation in the European Parliament would probably decrease by the eight or so seats Scotland would have.

In a hostile environment

Article Abstract:

Sara Parkin has lectured on Green politics to Nato officers at the Nato Defence College since 1989. A six-month course covers the global challenges of population migration, energy, environment, drugs, terrorism, the politics of water and nuclear proliferation. The objective is to get the students to think about the unthinkable. Progress is not defined by increased production. A logical conceptual framework is needed to look for ecological solutions.
