There has been a decline in consumer spending in the UK as a result of the terrorist attacks in the US, with many people remaining at home to watch events on television. Consumers are also showing unwillingness to make large financial commitments at a time of international uncertainty.

Shoppers put the squeeze on the high street

Article Abstract:

Most of the UK's leading retailers are continuing to experience weak sales, even though there has been a rise in weekly disposable income. Poor sales are partly the result of the fact that consumers now expect prices for some goods to fall, and they therefore delay purchases. Furthermore, there has been a shift from consumer goods towards services, while problems are also being created by a lack of inspiration among retailers.

Canny consumers outsmart the stores as high streets run into hard times

Article Abstract:

The UK's retailers are experiencing considerable difficulties, and many are being forced to reduce prices dramatically in order to dispose of seasonal stock. Retailers claim that sales are poor because consumer confidence is declining. However, economists emphasize that real wages are rising, employment is growing and the savings ratio is much higher than it was at the beginning of the last recession, when consumers had accumulated very large credit card debts. In fact, research indicates that consumer confidence has actually increased since Christmas 1998.
