Captain John Mott

Article Abstract:

Naval officer and administrator John Mott entered the Royal Naval Collage at Dartmouth, England, in 1930 at the age of 13. He later studied at the Royal Naval Engineering College and at Keyham in Leicestershire, England. He began his service during the second world war as a sub-lieutenant on HMS Exeter, and was later posted to the destroyer Jamaica. He was accepted for the Fleet Air Arm in 1944, and after the second world war was placed in charge of engineering instruction at the Royal Naval Engineering College at Manadon, England.

Sir Matthew Campbell

Article Abstract:

Civil servant Matthew Campbell studied at Glasgow University, entering the civil service in 1928. He spent short periods of time at the Inland Revenue and the Admiralty, but then moved to the Dept of Agriculture, where he was to serve for more than 30 years. He became the first head of the Dept of Agriculture and Fisheries in 1962, but gained particular respect as Secretary of the Taylor Committee, which created the Crofters' Commission, between 1951 and 1954.

Dick Duffield

Article Abstract:

Richard Duffield volunteered for the Navy in 1941, and in spring 1943 joined the submarine H44 as signalman to the commander. He moved in Jun 1943 to HMS Viking, where he served until May 1945. He and his colleagues constantly risked their lives in active service off the Norwegian coast and in the Arctic. They were responsible for defending convoys carrying essential supplies, and had to endure very difficult conditions.
