A nation descends into anarchy

Article Abstract:

There has been widespread rioting in Indonesia, and the future of President Suharto seems to be increasingly in doubt. The situation in Jakarta, Indonesia, where a state of near anarchy is emerging, is particularly tense. Tanks and armoured cars are being used and shops and businesses have shut down. The rioting is partly a political protest, but is also directed against the country's ethnic Chinese, who are often the target of attacks in times of unrest.
