Cathedrals of commuting revolutionise the old Tube

Article Abstract:

Many interesting design features have been incorporated into the 10-mile, 2.7 billion pounds sterling Jubilee Line extension to the underground railway system in London, England. Roland Paoletti, the main architect for the project, has taken great care to ensure that the new stations have a logical layout. Daylight will penetrate to platform level, and there will be sliding glass screens on each platform to prevent passengers falling under trains. There have been many challenges associated with this project, which is due to be completed in autumn 1998.

London - the city that never moves

Article Abstract:

There are now extremely serious traffic congestion problems in London, England. This is in turn creating very high levels of pollution. The Tube is in a very poor state of repair, and it will be necessary to cut some services in order to ensure that the network does not collapse altogether. However, a number of new rail projects are now being planned, and local authorities are attempting to deal with vehicle problems. In Wandsworth, for example, fines may be imposed on people who drive cars which produce high levels of pollution.

Light at the start of the tunnel

Article Abstract:

The Jubilee Line Extension, which is due for completion in early 1999 following lengthy delays, will give London Underground a new opportunity to portray itself as a supporter of architecture, as it was during the 1930s. The company has made considerable efforts to select architects who will ensure that the 11 stations along the route of the Jubilee Line Extension will not be bland and featureless. North Greenwich Station will be the largest underground station in Europe.
