Che-mania revives the ghosts of Castro's revolutionary past

Article Abstract:

The memory of revolutionary Che Guevara, who died in 1967, remains very strong in Cuba. His influence is particularly powerful as plans are made to rebury his body, which was exhumed in Bolivia in Jul 1997, in Cuba. The body will lie in state for seven days, and many events relating to his life will be held. There are mixed views about the relationship between Guevara and Cuban President Fidel Castro, and especially about whether Castro is sincere in the continuing adulation of Guevara.

Clinton's Haiti glory marred by killing

Article Abstract:

The visit to Haiti by president Bill Clinton to mark the occasion of the withdrawal of the last of the 20,000 US troops who participated in the peaceful occupation in Sep 1994 has been marred by scandal. It has been revealed that Mondesir Beaubrun, Haiti's Interior Minister, is suspected by an FBI investigation team of being involved in the murder of Mireille Durocher, a lawyer and opposition politician. There are now fears that civil unrest could follow the departure of the US troops.

Junta's opponents thrown live into sea

Article Abstract:

Recent reports have indicated that many political prisoners 'disappeared' during Argentina's 'Dirty War' in the period 1976-83. These revelations have caused great embarrassment to president Carlos Menem as he campaigns to be re-elected. Ordinary people have now received confirmation of their long-held suspicions that opponents of the country's former military rulers were dumped live at sea, and it is thought that a total of 4,000 were killed and 9,000 disappeared.
