Cheers, Auntie! We knew you'd look after us ...

Article Abstract:

Controversy over plans to restructure the BBC's libraries and archives department has been fuelled by the revelation that the BBC wiped tapes of the classic 1960s comedy show 'Not Only ... But Also' in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The BBC's archive is regarded as having great national significance, as it contains 1.5 million items of film and video, 23 million newspaper cuttings, 750,000 audio recordings, 160,000 books and 1.2 million records and CDs. Restructuring and redundancies are planned in response to anticipated losses of between 2 million pounds sterling and 3 million pounds sterling in 1997.

Why no news is bad news for Scotland

Article Abstract:

The decision by the BBC not to run a separate 'Six O'Clock News' programme for Scotland has been greeted with considerable anger in Scotland. This issue has received very little attention in England, but is likely to become increasingly significant within a wider fight to devolve BBC Scotland away from England. Managers at the BBC are taking seriously the possibility that Scotland could secede from the BBC, especially as the Scottish National Party regards BBC Scotland as a key matter in its battle with Labour for control of the Scottish Parliament.
