Chekhov calls the shots

Article Abstract:

There have been a number of different interpretations of Chekhov's play 'Uncle Vanya.' Some have removed the play a long way from its origins, with those responsible for them believing that the key themes of the play are not confined to pre-revolutionary Russia. Most recently, Peter Stein has a production which is to visit the Edinburgh Festival, while Howard Barker's radical rewriting of the play is to open shortly at the Almeida theatre in London, England.

The judgement of Paris, France

Article Abstract:

Opera directors John Wells and Michael Frayn have both been working on versions of Offenbach's operetta 'La Belle Helene,' which is a spoof of Greek mythology. Frayn is directing the operetta for the English National Opera (ENO), and has decided to reinvent it as 'La Belle Vivette,' a backstage drama about the creation of an operetta. Wells' version remains more faithful to the original, but contains some new elements of humour.
