Children are obscene but not heard

Article Abstract:

There is a strong trend towards political correctness in children's publishing, with characters being evenly divided between the sexes and each story giving clear moral signals. Publishers are very keen to avoid any hint of racial or sexual prejudice, and characters are portrayed in very standardised environments. This considerations can lead illustrators to feel extremely constrained, as there are many things which they are no longer allowed to include in their pictures.

Hands off my allotment

Article Abstract:

Local councils in the UK are obliged under the Allotment Acts of 1887 and 1908 to provide plots where non-landowners can grow food. However, these are now coming under threat as the government approves the sale of many to developers. Allotments are still popular, with 13,000 people on waiting lists to obtain an allotment. They create a strong sense of community, and provide a valuable source of fresh food at reasonable prices.

What an allotment we've got!

Article Abstract:

Allotment gardening can be hard work, but is also very enjoyable. Allotment owners must be willing for their work to be exposed to the scrutiny of other gardeners, and must ensure that they meet certain basic standards if they are to retain their allotment.
