Surgeon Christiaan Barnard, who has died at the age of 78, came to international attention after performing the first heart transplant in 1967. He led a colourful life, often spending time with celebrities and travelling the world.

Carnival's crush does not hold back the dancing in the streets

The 2001 Notting Hill Carnival in London, England, attracted very large numbers of people but there were few security problems. There were 10,000 police officers on the streets, creating a heavy financial burden.

Motorists trapped for hours by blizzards
