Channel 4 could be sold off

Article Abstract:

Channel 4 television, the which is allowed to broadcast until 2002 with an Independent Television Commission licence, and had over GB 80mn in assets at the beginning of 1997, may be sold off by the UK government following proposals by the UK chancellor to dispose of more than GB 12bn in state assets. According to the chief secretary to the Treasury, Alistair Darling speaking on BBC television's On The Record on 14 June 1998, although the privatisation of the Post Office will be a more important issue for the government, he refused to rule out altogether a possible sell-off of Channel 4 in the future.

The camera never lies, but the computer does

Article Abstract:

The BBC's new 3D Virtual Studio will use powerful graphics computers to create sets. In contrast with 2D sets, the audience's view of the sets will change as the camera moves. Each camera is connected to a Silicon Graphics Onyx supercomputer, as a great deal of computing power is required. The high level of computing power needed makes virtual studios very expensive, but Danny Popkin, technical development manager at the BBC, believes that costs will be cut in the future by using a hybrid 2D/3D system.
