Clarke does not need to make massive tax cuts

Article Abstract:

Political developments are playing a key role in economic decision-making in the UK at present. Chancellor Kenneth Clarke is aware that the forthcoming Budget will be the last one which he will present which will have any clear impact before the next general election. The economy appears to be performing well, but the Conservative party is performing very badly in the opinion polls. This puts pressure on the chancellor to introduce tax cuts, limit the public sector borrowing requirement and not treat public services too harshly.

Learning our lessons from the last time around

Article Abstract:

It is important to learn from the mistakes of the late 1980s if the UK is to avoid another recession. One of the main mistakes of that era was to loosen up monetary and fiscal policy too much following the stock market collapse in 1987. This prompted a rapid rise in consumption and house prices.
