Clarke finds few soulmates in Switzerland

Article Abstract:

UK chancellor Kenneth Clarke remains convinced that monetary union will probably not go ahead on time in 1999. Furthermore, most European member states will not be in a strong enough economic position to justify monetary union. This view is not shared by most delegates at the World Economic Forum which is currently taking place in Davos, Switzerland. They are generally firmly of the opinion that monetary union should go ahead as planned, regarding it as a positive force for change.

A triumph of business and lunch

Article Abstract:

The annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, deals with many extremely important issues. However, it is sometimes hard to see how the issues discussed give business leaders further assistance in dealing with the everyday management of their companies. There is a strong sense of general wellbeing and reconciliation, and this seems to give hope for the future. No key decisions are made, but even discussions can be extremely useful.

Pro-EMU business lobby is speaking out at last

Article Abstract:

The UK's largest businesses are set to encourage rational debate about the likely economic impact of European Monetary Union (EMU). There is now a growing body of business opinion in favour of EMU, contrasting sharply with the government's Euro-sceptical views. Top companies now acknowledge that it is vital that the UK does not make mistakes with regard to EMU, as that would severely damage British business.
