Major faces mutiny by ministers

Article Abstract:

The UK Conservative party's campaigning for the forthcoming general election could be severely affected if frontbench MPs carry out a threat to defy government policy on Europe as they speak to local people. This would prompt calls for the rebel ministers to be dismissed, and would highlight the fact that the Conservative party remains deeply divided over Europe. Some observers believe that up to two-thirds of Conservative candidates could locally dissociate themselves from the stance taken in the party's national manifesto.

Grandees are just dinosaurs, snarls Tory right

Article Abstract:

The conflict within the UK Conservative party between Euro-sceptics and those who wish the UK to show a greater commitment to the European Union has become increasingly bitter. Indeed, Labour party leader Tony Blair has claimed that the conflict is now paralysing the government. The Eurosceptics seem to be gaining an advantage, and continue to work very hard to ensure that a future Conservative government would not be able to obtain a majority in favour of a single European currency.

Speak of the devil

Article Abstract:

The UK Conservative party has launched a strong advertising campaign against Labour party leader Tony Blair. The party is aware that Labour's lead is based on voters' perceptions of Blair as honest and trustworthy, so the campaign aims to demonise him. He has also been attacked personally by defence secretary Michael Portillo, who claims that Blair is not fit to govern because he plans to 'tamper' with the monarchy.
