Shirtsleeved Major rallies the Tories to his cause

Article Abstract:

Prime minister John Major has so far gained support among delegates attending the Conservative party's 1996 annual conference. However, a true indication of the unity of the party will not be gained until chancellor Kenneth Clarke has spoken, putting forward the case for retaining the option to join a single European currency. Top ministers feel that the activities of the Eurosceptics within the party could well bring it defeat at the next general election, so creating unity is vital.

Politicians at the Conservative Party Conference in Oct 1992 called for unity over Europe as a split could lose the party the government. Lord Tebbit was applauded in his request for the Treaty on European Union not to be ratified but Prime Minister John Major was not swayed. Douglas Hurd said that all members desired a wider Community and did not want centralised power. He considered the Birmingham summit provided the opportunity to amend the treaty and explore subsididarity.

Hurd sees 'madness' closing door to power

Article Abstract:

The Conservative Party conference debated the Treaty on European Union. Foreign Secretary Douglas Hurd warned that dissension might cause loss of power. He said the treaty preserved the principle of minimum interference in national affairs. The government would produce an explanatory booklet which would be made available to the public. Lord Tebbit said that public opinion was turning against federalism and advocated withdrawal from monetary union.
