Clinton pledges an African Renaissance

Article Abstract:

Africa hopes that the six-country tour by President Bill Clinton will mark the beginning of a revival in its fortunes. Many people turned out to greet Clinton in Ghana, the first stop on his tour, despite having to wait many hours in very high temperatures. Clinton has stated that the US feels that fundamental changes have taken place in Africa since the late 1980s, and predicted that an African Renaissance will now take place. However, he also pointed out that democracy is still in its early stages in Africa.

Moi stirs up Kenya's tribal strife

Article Abstract:

Opposition groups in Kenya claim that the government of President Daniel arap Moi is deliberately stirring up ethnic conflict between the Pokot and Marakwet peoples in the country's Rift Valley as a means of remaining in power. They believe that the government is encouraging ethnic cleansing, ensuring that opposition voters are removed and that the Rift Valley is in total support of the government. Some observers believe that there is a danger of civil war breaking out in Kenya.
