Coca-Cola, Jane Austen - just what makes a classic?

Article Abstract:

It has become increasingly common in the UK to designate art-objects as 'classics.' This trend raises some issues of concern. In some cases, hailing something as a classic is merely a marketing ploy, and there is also a danger that the popularity of the concept of a classic will merely devalue its meaning. Some observers argue that English literature has no classics at all. To be a classic, an art-object must, among other things, have the power to define a genre and show endurance over time.

Mailer, the Great I Am

Article Abstract:

Norman Mailer's forthcoming book, entitled 'Gospel According to the Son,' is already attracting considerable controversy. The work, a life of Christ told in the first person, is likely to be dismissed by many critics, as has much of his earlier material. It is worth remembering that there is a long history of works dealing with Christ attracting great controversy, so Mailer, even though he may wish to be provocative, is certainly not being original.
