Albania has one of the most rapidly expanding economies in Europe, and therefore attracts considerable attention from foreign investors. However, they often find that investing there brings many difficulties. There are no laws on basic issues such as land ownership, and there are almost no private banks. The country's basic infrastructure is very underdeveloped, and corruption is rife. Privatisation has attracted the attention of criminals, and business can only be done through appropriate connections.

The United States has managed to persuade all groups involved in the conflict in Bosnia to agree to a ceasefire, and talks are now being held to finalise the details. The non-combatant participants in the negotiations have agreed to give funds for the rebuilding of the country, making the ceasefire more likely to be successful. There is considerable optimism that the ceasefire will hold.
