White men can't joke

Article Abstract:

The cartoon film 'Coonskin' was used by pressure group Congress Of Racial Equality to gain publicity, according to Ralph Bakshi, the film's director. He emphasizes that black people who saw the film, which is a humorous allegorical interpretation of the black American folk story of Br'er Rabbit, greatly enjoyed it. He believes that the film is really about what is right and what is wrong. He feels that the original art of cartooning was to attack, and that Walt Disney's approach to cartooning was closer to illustration.

Egoyan's take on Everyman

Article Abstract:

Filmmaker Atom Egoyan emphasizes that he collaborated fully with novelist William Trevor during his adaptation of the latter's novel 'Felicia's Journey.' He was very concerned to honour the book's spirit and to make full use of Trevor's input. He feels that, through collaborating with Trevor, he was able to benefit from the full scope of the novel's detail and clarity. He greatly admires the ways in which, in Trevor's short stories especially, the characters develop rituals for coping with their neuroses.

Billie and Lester against the world

Article Abstract:

The 25-year relationship between singer Billie Holiday and saxophonist Lester Young, who died within four months of each other in 1959, was extremely intimate but totally platonic. They had great personal and musical affinity, with a common view of the world. Their relationship was at its most cohesive in the late 1930s. Holiday was more extrovert than Young, but they were both insecure and sensitive. These characteristics became increasingly pronounced in the 1940s.
