Computer companies in the UK are linking with universities and colleges of further and higher education to offer accessible information technology (IT) training. In some cases, this training is being taken up by IT professionals looking to update their knowledge or learn new skills, while in other cases it is being used by professionals from other subject areas who wish to obtain specific training in software and techniques. Colleges are finding that there is strong demand for IT courses, but are experiencing difficulties with recruiting sufficient skilled teaching staff.

Article Abstract:

Only a small proportion of new computer science graduates in the UK consider training to be a teacher, regarding teaching as being poorly paid and having a low status. In contrast, universities running teacher training courses in information technology attract a substantial number of applications from mature students, who regard their industrial experience as a valuable asset. Some universities are seeking to make up for the shortfall in applications to train to teach information technology by recruiting applicants from non-computer science backgrounds who wish to teach.

For the homeless, employability is IT

Article Abstract:

Streets Ahead, a recruitment agency which finds employment for the homeless, is looking to ensure that the homeless learn computer skills or bring their existing computer skills up to date, thus boosting their attractiveness to employers. It has received support from Microsoft, Intel and Gateway 2000 to set up a technology centre at its offices in Kingsway, London, England. This facility has a network of 13 multimedia PCs, and will cost around 40,000 pounds sterling a year to run.
