Compare living standards, not tax

Article Abstract:

The UK government is misguided in assuming that a low total tax burden is beneficial for enterprise and economic expansion. In fact, the UK's tax burden is very close to the European Union average of 30%, if social security is excluded. There is a clear positive connection in the European Union between the overall tax burden and the standard of living as defined by gross domestic product per head. The standard of living in the UK, where the tax burden is low, is relatively low. High taxes are not responsible for a low standard of living, while a high standard of living allows a country to impose high taxes.
