Corruption at the heart of the revolution

Article Abstract:

Winnie Mandela is posing a growing problem for the South African government, attracting young, poor blacks who are disillusioned with the government and encouraging them to join the radical Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC). Some observers now believe that she should be banished if the administration is to survive. Further problems are also being caused by allegations of sleaze, particularly in the light of claims that anti-apartheid campaigner Allan Boesak misused almost 400,000 pounds sterling of fund given by many different donors.

Old ills haunt new S Africa

Article Abstract:

Unemployment is still around 45% in South Africa, with black township dwellers being particularly badly affected. This is causing them to lose faith in the African National Congress government of Nelson Mandela. The government must also urgently address the problem of housing, with the Reconstruction and Development Plan apparently not having been very successful so far. Further problems are being caused by the weakness of the country's economy.

South Africa wakes from its long sleep

Article Abstract:

There are signs that South Africa's economy is starting to pick up, especially as the country becomes a popular tourist destination once more. Manufacturers report high levels of orders, and service industries have discovered new markets both within South Africa and in neighbouring countries. However, unemployment is still very high, and economic growth in 1995 will not be high enough for large numbers of jobs to be created.
