Counting on new ways to collect cash

Article Abstract:

Director of the Alexandra Rose Day (ARD) charity Gillian Greenwood is preparing for the charity's flag day on Jun 15, 1993, the number of charities involved in it having increased from 300 to over 1,000 during the past five years. The ARD flag day is run as a franchise, charities keeping 80% of their day's takings with the remainder going to ARD. Charities that previously did not collect on the streets because they found it distasteful have now begun to do so, as there was no alternative. A recent survey by the Charities Aid Foundation has shown that dances, quiz nights and sponsored walks were the most popular of the new methods devised to raise funds.

The Children's Country Holidays Fund was founded in 1884 for London children under 13. In the 1990's, about 3,000 children a year go on these holidays, many from single-parent families living in poor conditions. Health, education and social welfare representatives recommend children, some of whom are neglected or abused. Under-9's stay with a family for 10 days, older children camp. Energetic volunteers are more rare in the 90's because of lack of time.
