County survival hopes pinned on 'holiday test.' (local government reorganisation, Derbyshire)

Article Abstract:

Derbyshire, England, is a model for shire county reorganisation, which removes the two-tier system of district and county councils. The Local Government Commission seeks single authorities to provide most services, including education, social services and roads. Derbyshire has nine districts. It could change to two unitary authorities, Derby City and an authority for the rest of Derbyshire. The county council believes three unitary authorities would be necessary. Community identity is an important factor.

Vice-chancellors want streamlined pay deals

Article Abstract:

University vice-chancellors have established a working group under the chairmanship of Brian Fender Vice-Chancellor of Keele University which proposes a unified pay structure for all university staff from caterers and maintenance staff to professors. Local market conditions would be considered and individuals would be consulted. Deals would no longer be made with unions, which would have less signifiance. The proposals intend staff to feel part of a team serving the customer in total quality management.

On trial for three days

Article Abstract:

Warwick University opened itself to investigation from the Academic Audit Unit. The administrators and teaching staff of the University were closely questioned about quality control and course reviews. Although internal reviews were thought to be thorough, the auditors suspected an element of coziness could have crept in. The University is now awaiting the report of the team that feels it has not seen evidence of close scrutiny.
