The skills that fail to travel

Article Abstract:

The Dept. of Education and Employment is asking British university teachers to develop transferable employability skills in graduates, but the problem is that no common definition of such skills exist. Furthermore, it is an illusion to believe that there are such things as core skills that can be applied in any situation or context. The idea that a person possesses problem-solving skills becomes meaningless when placed in a specific context since problem solving in physics bears little resemblance to problem solving in history.

Crisps

Article Abstract:

The UK market for potato crisps, which includes sales by pubs and catering outlets, is examined. Potato crisps are distinguished from the larger snack foods market whose products are made from corn, wheat, rice or from small pieces of potato that have not been fried. Market growth has seen phenomenal rise in 25 years with sales valued at approximately 100 million pounds sterling in 1972 alone. Potato crisps will continue to take its share from standard products although the latter will remain the market's dominant force.
