Cruise missiles won't stop the dangers facing US democracy

Article Abstract:

Great confusion and worry has been caused in the US by the fact that President Bill Clinton is facing impeachment at precisely the same time as US forces take military action against Iraq. There is great tension between politicians, who seem very disconnected from ordinary people. Most Americans feel that it is right to take military action against Iraq, but do not regard Clinton as a natural commander-in-chief. Some observers feel that Clinton has abused his power by ordering the attack on Iraq to take attention away from the impeachment hearings.

Lobbyists in the driving seat

Article Abstract:

Political lobbyists have become an integral part of the political establishment in the US. Their power is based on the close links they have established with the most influential politicians. They are able to gain access to politicians whose time is very fiercely protected, and they sometimes actually buy time by making large donations. Most Americans are strongly opposed to the fact that political lobbyists wield so much power. It appears that the US political lobbying system is now becoming established in the UK.

A perfect sex scandal for the New Puritans

Article Abstract:

The disappearance of White House intern Chandra Levy, who is alleged to have had a relationship with Congressman Gary Condit, reveals negative aspects of how Washington functions. In Washington, power is extremely important, and it is common for politicians to have a predatory attitude towards interns, the least powerful people within the political system.
