Cynicism of 1988 returns to haunt Bush

Article Abstract:

The US Pres George Bush has no coherent policies to offer the US. Bush believes that victory for the 1992 election can be gained through a shallow campaign; he lacks new ideas. Bush believes that he will be elected on past merit such as the Gulf War which was responsible for a shortlived rise in his popularity. Many Republicans feel betrayed by the breaking of his 1988 no new tax pledge. Democratic leader Bill Clinton remains 29 points ahead of Bush. James Baker who will be taking over the Republican campaign remains Bush's only hope for victory.

Article Abstract:

Despite poor polls, since James Baker became Chief of Staff to President Bush the Republican campaign has become more purposeful. His strategy involves President Bush delivering specific messages to particular groups of people. Although he can re-iterate that he directs the country, voters feel the need for change. The Democratic opponent Bill Clinton has a good campaigning style, refuting Republican claims against him, but in the past he has made ambiguous policy statements.

Bush feels the ground shift beneath him

Article Abstract:

The first television debate in the 1992 US Presidential elections on Oct 11 1992 was very successful for Ross Perot. The candidates' statements on personalities, jobs, debt and taxes, defence, Europe, peace-keeping and China are reported. Bill Clinton was competent but verbose. George Bush elaborated his foreign policy accomplishments but did not have any new issues to raise. The candidates were unable to question each other.
