Holocaust study stirs passions at Harvard

Article Abstract:

Considerable controversy has surrounded the offer by Kenneth and Evelyn Lipper of more than $3 million to fund a chair of Holocaust studies at Harvard University. The university has decided to turn down the offer, and the initial $1 million donation will now go to the Harvard Medical School's genetic research programme. University officials did not object to the chair on anti-Semitic grounds, but were concerned about the attitudes of Jewish historian Daniel Goldhagen, who was seeking the post. There were fears that focusing on the Holocaust would overlook the genocide of other communities.

Passions rise as Iran seeks new talks on death sentence

Article Abstract:

Iran will not execute anybody in relation to the fatwa against British author Salman Rushdie, according to Iranian Minister of Islamic Guidance Seyyed Ataollah Mohajerani. However, the government is not in a position to cancel a fatwa from a religious authority. Iran now hopes to re-start negotiations with the European Union over the fatwa. The Iranian government is also strongly aware of the influence of the 15 Khordad Foundation, which in Feb 1997 increased the reward money for Rushdie's murder.
