Damaged goods in the shop window

Article Abstract:

Joel Schumacher, 53, was once a professional window dresser but is now making a name with his films. His latest, Falling Down, is seen as a very important film of the 90's and tells of a white American who loses his job and his wife and goes on the rampage. Although the hero of the film behaves badly he is portrayed as something of a hero and the Koreans, Mexican-Americans and other ethnic groups in the film are shown in a bad light. This has caused a furor from these minority groups. The film is so controversial because it deals with white problems.

One man and his bug

Article Abstract:

David Cronenberg, writer-director, has adapted William Burroughs' book 'Naked Lunch' about William Lee, a vermin exterminator who writes. The film portrays writing as a nightmare and the writer's typewriter as an aphrodisiac. Lee kills his wife when under the influence of his bug powder. He becomes a writer by accepting his homosexuality. Peter Weller plays Lee intelligently. Cronenberg uses less horror than in his previous films; the bugs are refined and the special effects are subtle.

Old World without end

Article Abstract:

The theme of Americans in Europe has been treated in varying ways in films over recent decades. Originally, a trip to Europe was often portrayed as a form of escapism, with the American having a rather naive view of European life. This was later replaced by Americans in Europe who were evil and ugly. There now seems to be a return to the original view, as shown in films such as 'Barcelona' and 'Before Sunrise.'
