Danger up ahead for trackers?

Article Abstract:

The UK government has recognized that index-tracking trusts have significant benefits. This is reflected in the fact that it has recommended that only Individual Savings Accounts based on an index-tracker trust should qualify for its planned Charges/Access/Terms mark of approval. However, some observers are sceptical about index-tracking trusts, claiming that, if they receive very high levels of investment, they will artificially boost the value of the largest companies' shares and make the whole market more unstable.

For investors of a nervous disposition

Article Abstract:

Investors who are nervous about exposing themselves to severe fluctuations in the stock market are often tempted by equity funds which offer guaranteed returns. However, it is important to be aware that these guarantees can only be offered as a result of reduced performance. It is extremely unlikely that the guarantees would ever be triggered. Some financial advisers believe that clients should opt instead for ordinary unit trust or investment trusts, exposing themselves to the full risks and the full rewards.

A fund manager with nine lives

Article Abstract:

The Independent newspaper has devised a method of selecting stocks using Schrodinger, a cat. The cat makes stock selections by choosing pieces of dried cat food from a numbered grid. A small companies portfolio assembled in this way saw a rise of 4.35% in the year to Aug 12, 1997, compared with a rise of 3.25% for the average fund in the small companies sector and 0.37% for the funds' benchmark index. This method has also been used successfully for the UK equities growth sector.
