Death of the family doctor

Article Abstract:

It has become increasingly difficult to recruit family doctors (GPs) in the UK over recent years. This is because the profession has declined in status, with GPs being faced with long working hours, high levels of bureaucracy and an uncertain future. There are now moves to counteract these problems by redefining the role of GPs, giving them more involvement in minor emergency care. Some see this positively, while others view it as increasing their workload. GP representatives are now calling on the government to fund more medical school places and to invest in improved training schemes.

We can't all buy personal security

Article Abstract:

The UK government is gradually moving towards a 'self-provision' approach to insurance, looking at areas of the welfare state from which the public sector can withdraw completely. Over the last 10 years, more and more people have been encouraged to take out private pension provision, private health insurance and private cover for legal expenses, and private insurance is gradually eating away at the welfare state. However, some observers are now starting to claim that the private sector cannot replace the welfare state completely.

Subtle facets of a rough diamond

Article Abstract:

John Prescott, one of the candidates for the deputy leadership of the Labour Party, defends trade unions but with a reduced block vote size. He recommends splitting the vote so that individual views are represented, and having the women's part of the national executive committee elected by ordinary members, not by the unions. He feels this would create a stronger, more equal relationship.
