Deliver us from hospital cutbacks

Article Abstract:

Budgetary constraints have affected midwifery in the United Kingdom. There are insufficient beds and mothers are being discharged rapidly if there are no complications, sometimes after only an hour and a half. Time spent in hospital has decreased for new mothers since the 1950s. New mothers were taught parenting skills in those days. Parents in the 1990s are often ignorant of how to cope with their new babies. There are some benefits to returning home early, such as less risk of infection for newborn infants.

Downland newts hope for small pond success

Article Abstract:

The decline in numbers of traditional man-made dew ponds on the South Downs, England, has had a negative impact on populations of rare amphibians such as the great crested newt. For this reason, the National Trust is beginning to restore dew ponds using the traditional method of hollowing out the earth and lining it with straw and clay. The newt population has also been negatively affected by the fact that some people have been using the remaining dew ponds to dispose of unwanted goldfish and carp.

The secret of Hazel Lansdale's smile

Article Abstract:

A relatively new surgical procedure makes it possible to use AlloDerm, a sterilized, rehydrated skin tissue, for permanent lip enhancement. The tissue, which is taken from human corpses and is only available from US concern LifeCell, is inserted into the lip through incisions on either side of the mouth. LifeCell has never promoted AlloDerm for lip enhancement, as it is aware of the potential for controversy over the use of donated tissue for cosmetic procedures.
