Dirty dancing in Orchard Road

Article Abstract:

It is very interesting to visit Singapore during the festival of Thaipusam, which takes place every year on the day of the full moon in the month of Thai, which falls in late Jan or early Feb. During this time, Singapore presents a very different face to the visitor. Many people attend this Hindu festival, particularly in order to see the kavadis, human peacocks who must carry a steel and aluminium frame weighing up to 20 kg. This has many sharp points, and is also decorated with gifts for Lord Subramaniam, son of the god Shiva.

The sacred heart

Article Abstract:

The Labrang monastery in Xiahe, China, was founded in 1709. It has become one of the greatest in China. Officially, visitors must participate in one of several daily tours if they wish to see the more important monastic buildings, but some monks are willing to admit Westerners at other times. Visitors will see dazzling golden roofs and buildings and halls painted burgundy, ochre, black and white. It is also possible to visit smaller monastic centres in the area.

Broken wings, healing hands

Article Abstract:

The Jain Bird Hospital in Old Delhi, India, treated 29,889 birds in 1998. It is an oasis of compassion and care among the suffering and misery so visible in this city. It follows the principle of non-violence towards all living things, and staff pay great attention to even the most seriously ill birds. The birds are released into urban areas when they have recovered, and this has attracted some controversy.
