Disqualify us at your peril

Article Abstract:

At the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris Pulitti and his Italian fencing team were banned from the games for 'squaring' their fights. The referee, Kovacs, conferred with his judges before disqualifying the Italians. They tried to attack him and their friends shouted abuse until officials made them leave. At the 'Folies Bergere' in the evening Pulitti hit Kovacs on the face. He was assaulted again on the train home to Hungary. A duel was arranged for two weeks later: Kovacs was wounded and the incident closed with the two men friends.

Five years later, they are still in peril on the sea

Article Abstract:

The management of safety on off-shore oil rigs has changed since the Piper Alpha disaster on Jul 06, 1988. Lord Cullen's two volume report referred to the failure of the 'permit-to-work' system, the Department of Energy monitoring procedures and the non-existence of workers' safety committees. Cullen recommended the Safety Case approach. The Health and Safety Executive became the regulator. Trade unions believe industrial relations and safety are interdependent. Human relations in the industry are unsatisfactory.

Two's company, five's a crowd

Article Abstract:

Women who discover that they have a multiple pregnancy, often as a result of infertility treatment, can sometimes opt to have the number of embryos reduced, thus increasing the chances of giving birth to healthy children. However, this is a very difficult decision for the future parents to have to make, especially as the procedure must be carried out at an early stage in the pregnancy. Many are reluctant to kill any of their babies, especially if it has taken a long time to achieve the pregnancy.
