Private lives of really useful companies

Article Abstract:

Since the water, electricity and telephone utility companies have been privatised in the UK they have become more profitable, more efficient, better equipped and the employess are better paid. The waiting time for a new line from British Telecom has fallen from six months to a week. Power stations are manned by half the number of men that used to be needed. The water companies have invested much capital in their facilities. However the customer seems to be merely tolerated and these organisations are very autocratic, with the individual customer being largely ignored and the large user pampered.

Saving the city of mud

Article Abstract:

Some parts of the city of Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, are 700 years old, and are of great architectural importance. They have survived because the country was isolated from the outside world until relatively recently. However, they are now unde threat from modern development schemes. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) has been working for some time to protect Sanaa's heritage, but its work has not been welcomed by all observers.
