Doctor, doctor - can I have a fag and a chip butty now?

Article Abstract:

There is no link between heart disease and smoking, blood pressure or cholesterol, according to the World Health Organisation's 'Monica' project. These findings have caused considerable embarrassment for doctors, who for many years have been encouraging patients to moderate their tobacco and cholesterol intake. Indeed, the British Heart Foundation has rejected the findings, stating that it is still wise to stop smoking and eat less fatty foods. The unexpected results of this research indicate that the impact reducing or removing risk factors varies considerably from person to person.

Tobacco giants in 13bn pounds sterling merger

Article Abstract:

The planned merger of British American Tobacco (BAT) and Rothmans International will create a company producing 900 billion cigarettes a year. It is anticipated that the merged operation will focus on expanding markets in India, China, Africa and the Far East, balancing out falling sales in the West. This development has been condemned by anti-smoking groups, which claim that there will be more deaths worldwide from smoking as a result. The deal will strengthen BAT's position as the second-largest private cigarette concern in the world.

The habit Hollywood just can't stub out

Article Abstract:

Some 85% of the top 25 US box office films for each year from 1988 to 1997 featured smoking, according to research undertaken by the Norris Cotton Cancer Centre. Cigarette brands were shown in 28% of films, around the same proportion as prior to the ban on promotion agreed by the tobacco industry at the beginning of the 1990s.
