Dole heads queue of would-be presidents

Article Abstract:

Candidates and potential candidates for the Republican nomination to run for the presidency in 1996 have started campaigning already in New Hampshire, which will hold the first primary of the season. At present, the leading candidate is Senate Majority leader Bob Dole, who in recent opinion polls held 35-45% of the potential vote. Early campaigning has indicated that the key issues in the presidential election will include abortion and the ability of president Bill Clinton to stage a comeback.

Where leaders are made and losers are broken

Article Abstract:

The voting in the New Hampshire presidential primary will shape the outcome of the election and therefore has attracted interest from all the candidates. Pat Buchanan has been in the state since Dec 1991 and Bill Clinton is confident of support. Bob Kerrey is struggling but not so Tom Harkin who has a good response as has Paul Tsongas. New Hampshire represents a microcosm of the country's voting habits, so the media campaigns are working hard to catch votes.

Buchanan's victory rocks Republicans

Article Abstract:

The Republican party is in a state of considerable confusion following the victory of Pat Buchanan in the New Hampshire primary. It is generally accepted that he only won because there was no really strong opposition, and it is not thought that he will be able to win the party's nomination for presidential candidate, and certainly not the presidency. The primary has weakened the position of senator Bob Dole, but Lamar Alexander is still a serious rival.
