Libel trial hears war crimes denial

Article Abstract:

Anton Gecas, 76, gave evidence at the Court of Session, Edinburgh, on May 19 1992 in the case he brought against Scottish Television for accusing him of being a suspected war criminal. Originally a Lithuanian, Mr Gecas has been a British citizen since 1952 and worked for the National Coal Board as a mining engineer. Although he was a platoon commander of the 12 Lithuanian Police Battalion under German occupation, Mr Gecas said he could not recall any ghettos and had not seen the shooting of Jews as his unit's duties were different.

War crimes trial may follow ruling

Article Abstract:

The War Crimes Act 1991 covers murder and manslaughter committed outside Britain, and crimes by non-British citizens, for the first time. A commission led by Sir Thomas Hetherington examined 301 suspects in Britain. Charles Waudle of the Home Office stated on Jul 9 1992 that 92 cases were being examined but it is not known whether they include the Lithuanian company described by Anton Gecas in his libel case against Scottish Television. Lord Milligan obtained relevant commission evidence from witnesses in Lithuania.
