Kurds whisper freedom at poll

Article Abstract:

In October 1991 Saddam Hussein, hoping to cause a mass emigration from Kurdistan, instigated a blockade of food and fuel to the Kurds and stopped official salaries, but they did not leave. The Kurdish Front had to assume power. Their eight guerrilla factions experienced rebellion so they created Law Number One for the assembly and Law Number Two for the leadership, under which the leader cannot reject legislation entirely. Baghdad is virtually ignored and separation is possible. The Kurdish population of 3.5 million vote at the election on May 19 1992 for Masoud Barzani of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Jalal Talabani of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Mahmut Othman of the Kurdistan Socialist Party or Sami Abdurrahman of the Kurdistan Popular Democratic Party.

Tehran goes gunning for the Kurds

Article Abstract:

Iranian forces attacked villages and camps, including the Boulla base, along the Iraqi border in Apr, May and Jul 1993, to try to establish the range of Iranian Kurdish rebels. This has an impact on Iranian Kurdistan. The Kurdistan Democratic Party-Iran (KDPI) was founded in 1958 to fight for autonomy and cultural rights. It has lost 4,000 guerillas, and 50,000 civilians have been killed since 1983. Meetings between states in Ankara in Nov 1992 and in Mar 1993 failed to agree on joint action to prevent the rise of an independent Kurdistan.

US abandoned us, say Kurds

Article Abstract:

The US has abandoned the Kurds living in Iraq, according to the Kurdistan Democratic Party, which is fighting alongside the forces of Saddam Hussein in northern Iraq. This party allied itself with Hussein following fears that it would have to face an alliance between Iran and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. The Kurdistan Democratic Party believes that the US has failed to fulfill promises to assist Kurds in their efforts to gain autonomy.
