Cable television is connected in 268,812 British homes in January 1992 and UK cable laws are liberal so American and Canadian companies can test new technologies here. IBM and Time Warner are combining to offer radical services. In New York, Time Warner has 6.7 million subscribers to Quantum which offers 57 channels including on-screen ordering of videos. The system is equipped for high-definition, wide-screen tv, voice interactivity and computer linkage. IBM will develop an interactive pay-per-view system aimed initially at business users with a set-top box costing 500 pounds sterling. Videotron in London and Southampton offers Videoway with interactivity where viewers can choose camera positions and download software.

The biggest computer and communications exhibition, Cebit, was held in Hannover, Germany. The newest displays were of multimedia. Software which uses stereo sound and photographic quality images was available. Games, reference and educational material were exhibited. Integral CD-rom drives were the latest feature, bringing multimedia to the home market. Tandy's Grid or Victor system has software for accessing US information systems. The IBM PS/1 Multimedia System has easy user guides. Apple's personal digital assistant, Newton, can communicate with other personal computers.

A wide range of new technology will be made available in 1998. Some products and services will seem extremely innovative, but within a few years they will simply be regarded as an element of even more advanced technology. The most significant developments in 1998 will include Internet telephony, which will change the way leading telephone companies view their future, DVD, digital television and Internet-connected devices such as Sharp's MiniDisc recorder, which can download music from the Internet.
