Don't end one of our few great Enlightenment legacies

Article Abstract:

It is possible that the UK government will decide to end the very long tradition of allowing the general public free entry to art galleries and museums. Culture Secretary Chris Smith is keen to retain the free admission policy, but is believed to be coming under very strong pressure from the Treasury. There is particular uncertainty about the future of free admission at the British Museum, which is facing very serious financial difficulties. It is widely believed that many museums and art galleries across the country would begin charging admission fees if the British Museum did so.

A better code. Now make it work

Article Abstract:

The new code of practice for newspapers recommended by the UK Press Complaints Commission has the potential to considerably improve journalistic practice. If it is properly followed by editors, newspapers will no longer run intrusive, gossip-based stories about celebrities. However, there will be no financial sanctions for newspapers which do so. It seems likely that the code will be followed, as editors are very concerned about the possibility of the government deciding to introduce privacy legislation.

Article Abstract:

British foreign policy is starting to take on an international emphasis, rather than focusing just on Europe. National self-interest has become the key determining factor of foreign policy once more, and there is a new atmosphere of national and political self-confidence. The Conservative party is now promoting the UK as a world trader, moving away from the complications of the UK's relations with Europe.
