Double stigma for women in jail

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly widely recognized in the UK that women who are sent to prison generally have more to lose than men in the same situation. Most of them lose their homes, as they are unable to pay the rent, and it is common for them to be deserted by their partners and lose their children. A report compiled by Sir David Ramsbotham, the Chief Inspector of Prisons, indicates that few women are in prison for violent crime. Against this background, it is possible to argue that the social and financial cost of imprisoning women who have not committed violent crimes is greater than any benefits.

Multi-millionaires who keep Blair in his office

Article Abstract:

The UK Labour party has traditionally derived a large proportion of its funding from trade unions. However, this is no longer the case as big businesses increase their donations to the party. Recent information indicates that some of the UK's richest businessmen have made donations to the new Labour Leader's Office Fund. Such donations are made under an arrangement designed to allow the donors to conceal their identities.

For every Emma cleaning up at the Oscars, a thousand Jills are cleaning up at the office

Article Abstract:

Many Britons believe that actors are very wealthy, but this far from true. Almost three-quarters of the 400 Equity members surveyed by Leeds Metropolitan University had earned less than 10,000 pounds sterling from professional acting work during 1999.
