Dreams broken on the streets of Paris

Article Abstract:

The strikes which are currently taking place in France should be taken seriously as a significant turning point. They mark the beginning of a realisation that European unity may not take place after all. It is now clear that monetary union on the terms set by bankers is not compatible with the present levels of welfare, government borrowing and industrial subsidy, and voters are realising the federalism could bring insecurity and cuts. This may indicate the need to create a confederal Europe, in which basic human rights, trade, some security issues and environmental issues are controlled by a powerful central authority.

Why we should listen to the Panzer's rumble

Article Abstract:

Reaction in the UK to hints by German chancellor Helmut Kohl that there could be war if the European Union collapses has generally been dismissive. He has been portrayed as out of touch with a modern Europe in which war could not take place. He may well have exaggerated the risk of war, but it is worth remembering that before the first world war there was a widely-held belief that war would not take place. Indeed, there are a number of similarities in economic and political circumstances between that time and the present.

Why one man's beef is good for us all

Article Abstract:

The call by Sir James Goldsmith for a referendum on Europe will ensure that this will become a key issue in the next general election. It has particular significance at a time when the UK government is in conflict with the European Union about a ban on trading in beef. It is clear that political integration will never put an end to strong feelings about local issues, and that European directives will not eliminate competition for markets and resources.
