Strangers in the house

Article Abstract:

The recent decision to award the commission to design a new building for the Victoria and Albert museum in London, England, to Polish-born Jew Daniel Libeskind has attracted very mixed reactions. Foreign architects have generally received very little high-profile work in the UK, and in some cases they have been treated very badly. The commission awarded to Libeskind may be a sign that this situation is now going to change, but there is still little proof that British people have come to terms with foreign architects.

Passion tower

Article Abstract:

Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava is highly respected in Europe, and has been responsible for a number of very impressive public buildings, including Stadelhofen station in Zurich, Switzerland, and Lyon-Satalas station in France. In the UK, his name has been connected with several high profile building and engineering schemes, but he has not really been able to make his presence felt. He is now to be responsible for revamping a redundant office block in the City of London.

Exile and excellence

Article Abstract:

Architects who fled from the Nazi regime in Germany and from other areas of Europe where they were persecuted in the 1930s received only a lukewarm welcome in the UK. Erich Mendelsohn, for example, formed a partnership with Serge Chermayeff, and their design for a new municipal seaside pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea was widely criticised. This contrasts strongly with the positive reception given to architects who fled to the US.
