Labour can gain from the 48-hour watershed

Article Abstract:

The current controversy regarding the UK government's unwillingness to adopt European Union legislation setting down a maximum 48-hour working week could work to the advantage of the Labour party. Labour would do best to take an attacking stance, rather than a defensive one, emphasising that the decline in UK influence in Europe has reduced the country's ability to secure aims which the government has in common with other political parties. It would be possible for the Labour party to offer voters a new, more positive, approach to the European question.

Never mind the clear blue water

Article Abstract:

It is important that the UK strives to treat France and Germany as they are, rather than deliberately present misleading views of them, according to former foreign secretary Douglas Hurd. It is in the interests of the UK that France and Germany succeed in overcoming their economic difficulties. Furthermore, the single market is of great importance to the UK. It is important that the UK makes more effort to be on friendly terms with the UK, but friendship should not be regarded as conferring hegemony.

How the modern Empire strikes back

Article Abstract:

Media claims that the UK is living beyond its post-imperial role and means are incorrect, according to foreign secretary Douglas Hurd. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) plays a vital role in helping businessmen to obtain contracts abroad, especially as it has the right political contacts. The UK is making great efforts to establish sustainable, effective links in many parts of the world, and is finally starting to look beyond Europe.
