E-mail your way into college

Article Abstract:

It is widely recognized in the UK that the current system of applying for university places, which involves potential students applying a long time in advance and places being offered on the basis of predicted A-level grades, is unsatisfactory. A steering group headed by Cardiff University, Wales, Vice-Chancellor Sir Brian Smith has recommended that this problem is addressed through a new system in which A-level results would be published earlier. After this, students would apply electronically for university places, with offers being made only one week later.

The online truth is out there

Article Abstract:

The UK's universities are considering how latest technology can be used to add new elements to teaching. However, they emphasize that there will still be a need for traditional face-to-face teaching, as interaction is a key element in high quality education. New universities have been pioneers in using technology, but older universities are now encouraging all their staff to use computers to improve their teaching and students' learning. It is likely that the academics of the future will require different qualities from those required of academics today.
