EC farm deal 'will boost GATT negotiations.'

Article Abstract:

The European Community's new agriculture policy challenges the US to reduce subsidies to farms. Cereal prices could go down 29%. In France, farmers protested. In Britain the National Farmers' Union felt most upland beef and sheep farmers would not be affected but dairy farmers would lose and lowland beef and cereal farmers would be most affected. Farmers and farm incomes have reduced during the 1980s. Set-aside land will increase from 2% of cereal land to up to 15%. Some will be replanted after a year when a different field will be left fallow, and some will not be plowed to improve the environment.

France seeks reasons for ex-PM's suicide

Article Abstract:

French prime minister Edouard Balladur, who succeeded Pierre Beregovoy at the end of Mar 1992, has delayed the announcement of his recovery plan out of respect for his successor who shot himself on May 1, 1993. Two reasons are put forward for the suicide. The first is depression caused by the imminent announcement of the recovery plan and the certain criticism of the Socialist rule that would have accompanied it. The second is media coverage of an interest free loan taken by Beregovoy from Roger-Patrice Pelat in 1986 who was later accused of insider dealing in shares.

Swords drawn over a soldier

Article Abstract:

Head of the United Nations Protection Force General Philippe Morillon has been recalled from Bosnia, to the dismay of the French. French troops were supposedly upset about the inadequate definition of their mission, which is the UN's responsibility. French newspapers imply that General Morillon's recall is due to chiefs of staff's dissatisfaction. However, he has been in Bosnia for over a year, compared to the average stay of six months. He will be replaced by General Michel Zeisser, commander of the First Army in Metz, who will bring a change of role.
